AI Overviews cut #1 click-through rates by ~34.5%. Here's what the data means for your store blog — and 7 specific moves to protect and grow your traffic.
The AI Overviews traffic impact is real, and the number is right in the headline: ~34.5%. That's how much the click-through rate for the #1 organic result drops when a Google AI Overview appears on the same page, according to Ahrefs' April 2025 study. If your store blog has been bleeding traffic without a clear reason, this is probably part of it.
To be honest about the numbers: the 34.5% figure comes from Ahrefs' initial analysis comparing March 2024 to March 2025 data. A later Ahrefs update using December 2025 data put the drop as high as 58% — but that wider dataset and longer time window make an apples-to-apples comparison tricky. We're anchoring on the 34.5% figure because the methodology is cleaner and the comparison period is tightly controlled.
What's not in dispute is the direction. Every single study measuring the AI Overviews traffic impact has found a decline. The question for your store blog isn't whether this is happening — it's what you do about it.
Before jumping to tactics, it's worth understanding exactly what the data shows. The Ahrefs study tracked position-1 CTR for keywords that triggered an AI Overview in March 2025 vs. the same keywords before the U.S. rollout in March 2024. The top CTR for those AI Overview keywords went from 0.073 in March 2024 down to 0.026 in March 2025 — a collapse in the portion of searchers who actually click through.
Pew Research Center's July 2025 study — which tracked 68,879 actual searches — found that users clicked a traditional result only 8% of the time when an AI Overview was present, versus 15% without one. That's a roughly 47% relative drop in click probability for every search that shows an AI Overview. When Google answers on the page, roughly half the people who would have clicked your post simply don't.
Seer Interactive ran the longest continuous dataset: 3,119 informational queries across 42 organizations, spanning 25.1 million organic impressions from June 2024 through September 2025. Their numbers are even starker — organic CTR fell from 1.76% to 0.61% for queries with AI Overviews present. That's a 61% collapse over roughly 15 months.
The coverage is also expanding fast. BrightEdge data shows AI Overviews grew from 31% to 48% of all tracked queries between February 2025 and February 2026. For ecommerce specifically, they now appear on roughly 14% of shopping queries — a 5.6x increase in four months — and on about 83% of "best [product]" queries. If your store blog targets buying-guide content, that last figure should get your attention.
There is one bright spot buried in the Seer data: being cited inside the AI Overview is worth roughly double the clicks compared to ranking on the same page but not being cited. A cited page earns approximately 2.1% CTR on that query; an uncited page on the same results page earns around 0.9%. The gap between "cited" and "uncited" is now a more important distinction than the gap between ranking positions 1 and 5.
AI Overviews extract answers fast. Google's system is looking for a short, self-contained passage that directly addresses the search query — and it often finds it in the opening paragraph of a page. If your blog posts bury the answer after three paragraphs of scene-setting, you're handing citations to whoever gets to the point faster.
The fix is straightforward: write your first paragraph as if it's the only thing Google will read. State the answer, the key number, or the core recommendation before anything else. The rest of the post can provide context, depth, and evidence. This post does exactly that — the 34.5% figure appears in the first line.

Vague claims don't get cited. The Digital Bloom AI Visibility Report found that adding statistics to content increased AI visibility by 22%, and adding quotations from named sources raised it by 37%. Google's AI system needs to verify that your content is trustworthy, and the fastest proxy for trustworthiness is a specific, attributable claim.
For a store blog, this means citing the actual study behind a claim ("a 2025 Seer Interactive analysis of 42 organizations found…"), naming the expert you're referencing, and linking out to your primary sources so the claim is checkable. Generic statements like "research shows that customers prefer…" won't cut it anymore.
About 99.5% of AI Overview sources come from pages that already rank in the top 10 organically. That means AI citation work begins with domain authority and topical depth — not just on-page optimization. A store blog that publishes 3 disconnected posts a month is harder to cite than one that has a pillar page and 8–12 supporting articles all linking together on a single category.
Our piece on pillar pages and hub-and-spoke content covers this structure in detail. The short version: Google rewards domains that demonstrate depth on a topic, not just breadth. If you sell running shoes, having 12 interconnected posts about running form, shoe selection, injury prevention, and terrain types signals expertise in a way that 12 posts across 12 different topics simply doesn't.
Many AI Overviews pull from lists and bullet-formatted content because that structure is already broken into discrete, quotable chunks. A dense paragraph requires the AI to do parsing work; a bulleted list hands it pre-formatted pieces.
This doesn't mean every post should be a listicle. But it does mean that wherever you have a natural list — materials, steps, ingredients, features — formatting it as a proper <ul> or <ol> rather than a run-on sentence makes that content far easier to extract. The same applies to your H2 and H3 structure: headings that match real user queries ("How long does X last?" rather than "Durability") give the AI a clean, citable signal about what each section answers.
Informational queries — "how does X work," "what is Y" — are the most heavily affected by AI Overviews. About 88% of AI Overview triggers are informational intent queries, which is exactly the content most blogs default to. Pure informational content is becoming harder to earn clicks from, not because it's bad content, but because AI Overviews are designed to answer it on the page.
The content types that hold up better are those where clicking is unavoidable — users who need a tool, a product, a template, or a specific comparison that the AI summary can point to but not replace. For store blogs, this means more buying guides with genuine product comparisons, more "X vs. Y for [specific use case]" content, and more posts that require the reader to take an action only your site can facilitate.
Note that AI Overviews now appear on roughly 83% of "best [product]" queries — so those posts aren't immune. But a well-structured buying guide with specific product comparisons, real prices, and honest pros and cons is still far more likely to earn a citation (and a click-through) than a generic overview of a topic.
Google Search Console added AI Overview impression data in late 2025. This gives you a concrete way to see which of your posts are appearing in AI Overview results — and whether you're being cited inside the overview or just ranking below it. That distinction is the entire ballgame right now.
If you're getting impressions on AI Overview queries but not citations, that's a content structure problem you can fix. If you're not getting impressions at all on a topic you should own, that's a topical authority problem. The two issues have different solutions, and you can't tell which one you're dealing with without looking at the data. Here's a counterintuitive finding from the GrowthSRC 2025 study of 200,000 keywords: positions 6–10 experienced a 30% increase in CTR year-over-year on AI Overview queries. Meanwhile, searches without AI Overviews are getting more valuable — Seer Interactive found CTR on no-AIO queries climbed from 2.8% in early 2025 to 3.8% by February 2026.
The users who still click through when an AI Overview is present are higher-intent — they've already read the AI summary and they want more. That means your content doesn't just need to be good enough for a citation; it needs to be good enough to be worth reading after someone already got the short answer. Depth, original research, specific product recommendations, and genuine expertise are what close that gap. For posts targeting the zero-click search landscape more broadly, our analysis of which queries still earn clicks has useful data on where to focus your energy.
The math on store blogging has changed. Publishing 10 thin posts a month in hopes that some of them rank is less effective than it was two years ago. AI Overviews absorb the casual informational traffic those posts would have captured. What still works is publishing fewer, deeper pieces that are structured to earn citations — and building enough topical depth that Google trusts your domain to answer questions in your category.
For ecommerce teams running on limited content budgets, this is actually a useful forcing function. It's a reason to stop writing "what is X" posts that compete with Wikipedia, and start writing original, structured content your AI can't replicate: real product tests, side-by-side comparisons with actual prices, buying guides built around genuine customer questions.
The human editing pass matters more than ever here. AI-assisted drafts are fast, but the specificity, original data, and genuine voice that gets content cited — whether by Google's AI Overview or by another AI engine — still comes from editorial judgment. The post that earns a citation is almost never the one written entirely on autopilot.
AI Overviews aren't going away, and their coverage will keep growing. The 34.5% CTR drop at position 1 is an uncomfortable number, but it's a number you can work with. The stores that treat it as a call to produce more structured, more specific, more citation-worthy content will come out ahead. The stores that keep publishing the same volume of generic informational content will keep watching their analytics trend downward and wonder why.
The split between "cited" and "uncited" is where the real work is now. Being on page one and not being cited is the new version of ranking position 4 — technically visible, practically irrelevant. Get into the box, or build content the box can't replace.
Ahrefs' April 2025 study found a ~34.5% drop in position-1 CTR when an AI Overview is present. A later Ahrefs update using December 2025 data across 300,000 keywords put the figure as high as 58%, though the wider time window makes direct comparison harder. Pew Research (July 2025) measured an even simpler number: users click a traditional result only 8% of the time when an AI Overview appears, versus 15% without one.
No. Informational queries — 'how does X work,' 'what is Y' — are the most heavily affected because AI Overviews are built to answer them on the page. Transactional and commercial-intent content (product comparisons, buying guides, tool pages) holds up better because the AI can summarize the category but can't replace the actual purchase action or the depth of a real comparison.
Yes, meaningfully. Seer Interactive data shows a cited page earns roughly 2.1% CTR on an AI Overview query versus approximately 0.9% for an uncited page on the same results page. Brands cited inside AI Overviews also earn 35% more organic clicks and 91% more paid clicks compared to uncited competitors on the same query.
No. Roughly 99.5% of AI Overview sources come from pages already in the top 10 organically, but the specific citation is driven more by content structure and directness of the answer than by ranking position alone. A page at position 5 with a clear, extractable answer can outrank a position-1 page that buries the answer in dense prose.
Google Search Console added AI Overview impression data in late 2025. Check the Performance report and look for impressions on queries where an AI Overview is triggered. You can also search your target queries in an incognito window to check manually whether an AIO appears and whether your brand is cited inside it.
Yes, and they're getting more valuable. Seer Interactive data shows CTR on no-AIO queries climbed from 2.8% to 3.8% between early 2025 and February 2026 — because the users who search for something with no AI Overview present are more likely to click through. Identifying keywords in your niche that don't trigger AI Overviews is a legitimate traffic-protection strategy.
